  • Hi there Dave, Just an update on the 1956 intake. We have just held our 4th reunion at Rogerthorpe Manor. We originally intended a one off but everybody is keen to continue. We meet from about 3 pm and along with the chat we usually have a bit of fun with a prize raffle, a quiz loosely related to school and a singalong to Ivan Chaplin on his guitar accompanied by Trevor Minett. Rogerthorpe provide a really good BBQ style meal and a few beers. The time really flies by. We managed to raise £400 for charity which we are sending to the Yorkshire Cancer Fund. We have had one or two from outside the year join us and we are open to any others who may like to have a fun afternoon with a few reminiscences.

  • Reflections on the Onion.
Early January is the time of year when new calendars are needing the transference of information from the previous year. New diaries are collecting new entries, and we are reflecting on who did or didn't send us a card this Christmas, and the reasons why. In taking stock of the year gone by we are, in a way, adding another layer to the metaphorical onion of our lives. Only in our personal major earth-shattering moments or catastrophes do we have to call upon the strength and resilience within us to help us cope. A happy childhood is the bedrock of our stability, coupled with the love and concern of older generations. Those elements perhaps might carry us safely through a crisis in later life. To all those who have suffered loss or hurt in 2017, try peeling back a few layers of that onion's skin to find those happy times again. Log in and look at the photos, the stories, the buildings and the friends from earlier times, and hopefully 2018 will not seem so dark.

  • This is a Wartime photograph taken at a time when the staffing of schools was difficult due to so many young men having enlisted in the Armed Forces. Their places were filled by women who joined the older male teachers who were beyond the age of eligibility to serve. When this photo was taken, the sandbags at the front of the School in the early days of the War had been removed. There seems to be no Staff photograph for 1942-43, and so in order to name this female teacher we have to rely on the memories of those in the photo and other pupils of that time. Please have a look and see if you can help.

The suggestions so far are: Miss Parry? Miss Black? Miss Pennington?

A Challenge ----- If you can supply the names of any of the pupils, please do.

A Reunion of pupils who started at HGS in 1956 was recently held at Rogerthorpe Manor in Badsworth. 22 former pupils from far and near attended and swapped memories and experiences. Following a BBQ style dinner, Ivan Chaplin produced his guitar and led a 1960's singalong. After this, memories of HGS were tested by a quiz which was won by Joe Byrom. The prize was a bottle of wine from the Hamilton Russel vineyards in South Africa. The day was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone.
